The renowned Fantasy Film Center, located in The Zaentz Media Center in Berkeley, California has revived and reinvigorated their illustrious 3rd floor mixing stage, reopened in May 2016.

Formerly known as the Saul Zaentz Film Center, which opened its doors in 1981, the studio was conceived by Jeff Cooper, one of the world’s most sought-after screening room designers. Cooper’s work has ranged from major film/TV companies such as Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer (MGM), Dreamworks & NBC/Universal Studios to home theatre studios for Hollywood luminaries such as George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

More than 200 films, including the Academy award-winning Amadeus, The English Patient and The Right Stuff, as well as many other favorites including Blue Velvet, Boogie Nights, and Ghost World, were mixed on the 3rd floor stage. Often used by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences for Oscar and select screenings, Fantasy Film Center seats 39 people comfortably (with an additional 11 limited-view seats in the upper loge area) for any screenings.

Studio Director Jeffrey Wood says, “This theater was constructed like a musical instrument. The clarity and detail of the room is beautiful and the audio quality non-fatiguing for precision mixing.”

The buildout was overseen by technical expert Jim Austin, along with Fantasy’s own Alberto Hernandez and James Gangwer. The new renovation features an Avid S6, Meyers Acherons and HMS12s, as well as connections to the large reverb and chamber collection in the studios. It also has ISDN connection for any additional post-production work or listening.

Fantasy Film Center and Fantasy Studios continue to provide professional services for the film, video, virtual reality & video game communities. Full-time administrative, tech, and support staff are on site.

Fantasy Studios, located on the first floor, continues to be one of the most esteemed full-service recording studios on the West Coast with an extensive selection of microphones, outboard gear, instruments and natural echo chambers. The facility is comprised of three legendary recording and mixing rooms equipped with Pro Tools HDX, offering services such as ISDN to link studios worldwide, comprehensive media transfer work, editing and on-site mastering. Fantasy Studios is available for film, video, photo shoots, live streaming, conferences and special events. Amenities include a production office, two kitchens and three attached lounges for artist comfort and convenience. Fantasy Studios is walking distance to world-class restaurants & cafes, massage and yoga instruction, and offers discounted rates to a range of the best hotels in the East Bay.

Fantasy Film Center and Fantasy Studios are housed in the same building as the Saul Zaentz Center, home to numerous film and media production companies and complete post production services. As a secure complex, the Saul Zaentz Center offers privacy for celebrity clientele. We also offer ample parking to accommodate film crews, and our loading dock is street accessible for load-ins of extensive tour or lighting equipment.

Special thanks to Steve Schurtz from Meyer Sound and Pete Bouton from Avid for their support and guidance in reopening the theater.
